Every year, when Father’s Day weekend comes around, it feels like I’m at the local sportsman store on Saturday night searching amongst cleared out aisles for yet another sleeve of golf balls. And while I have it on good authority that my dad could never have too many golf balls, this year, I just want to do something slightly more meaningful. But the dads in my life are the dads who “have everything” and “need nothing.” And while I know he means it, gift-giving is a love language of mine, so this year I’d like to be the daughter who shows up with the perfect gift for dad.
But let’s be honest, times are tough, and coming to the table with a new grill or golf club set just doesn’t work for me. I’m much more of a “here, I made this with love” kind of gal, and so this year, I’ve come up with five homemade gifts I think every dad will love simply because his loved ones put thought and care into it.
While this may sound like an oversimplification of a gift, when was the last time you turned down a gorgeous plate of your favorite treats? Seriously? Throw in a handwritten, heartfelt note, and you’ll have dad in a puddle while he wipes chocolate from his lips. Plus, bringing treats to the family function always gets your brownie points (pun intended), so this is truly the perfect easy gift for dad.
Look, I debated this one back and forth with my friend because as moms, we see these masterpieces probably far more often than our spouses. And while the fridge might already be overcrowded with your kids’ drawings of dogs–no wait, I think they’re giraffes–oh! That’s a drawing of me… Anyway, slap it in a frame and those barely legible drawings become the pride and joy of dads and grandpas everywhere.
I’ve never met a carb that a dad didn’t love. If you joined in the 2020 craze of baking sourdough, this one is especially easy for you. If you’re more like me, the local farmer’s markets are ready and waiting for you. Also, it’s hard to beat fresh homemade jam in the summer with all the fresh fruits in bloom. Bring a fancy plate you already own, tie a ribbon around the jar, have the kids help create a card, and you’ve got yourself the tastiest gift.
One of the greatest gifts my family has ever done for my parents was a promise to clean out our childhood home where they had continued to host all of our old junk property for an undisclosed amount of years. We rented a large dumpster bin from the city and we chose a day for all of us to get together to either take home or throw out our stuff that had been collecting dust. The unexpected result was that as we took on rooms, we found fun pictures, memorabilia, and trinkets that held decades worth of stories and memories. We sat around and shared our favorite parts of childhood while helping our parents refresh their home. There are many versions of this gift that could work for you from cleaning out dad’s tool shed to helping him reorganize his home office.
Those previously mentioned photos we found in our house? Turns out we weren’t sure what to do with them because we didn’t want to lose them, but we also didn’t want them to get damaged or continue to clutter. Luckily we had Chatbooks. We scanned all those photos and then were able to create a simple, beautiful, shareable photo book to give to dad for Father’s Day. The best part? Once the book was made, Chatbooks took all those photos and turned them into a mini movie for us to share instantly! So bonus–those mini movies would be a perfect gift for the procrastinators who missed the shipping deadline, but still want to give something meaningful. You can show the video to the whole family, and then let dad know his book is coming soon! Two gifts in one? Sign me up!
So if you’re feeling a little sheepish that you’re behind, don’t worry. You’re not the worst. You’re just busy! But there is still time to help dad feel seen. A homemade gift of food, service, or a Chatbooks would be the best way to show your love for the dads in your life.
