The Emotional Math of Mother’s Day

Mother's Day feels more exhausting than celebrating

Mother's Day has become impossible to navigate.

There's guilt if you feel too happy about it (might make someone else feel bad).

There's guilt if you feel too sad (you should be grateful).

There's guilt if you want to be celebrated (seems needy).

There's guilt if you want to ignore it entirely (seems ungrateful).

The day that's supposed to be for us has become another emotional puzzle we have to solve perfectly.

Feel fulfilled but also acknowledge how hard it is. Want recognition but don't seem desperate for it.

Be grateful for what you have but don't minimize anyone else's struggle.

Show up with the right energy even when you're drowning.

Make sure everyone else feels comfortable with how you're handling your own day.

Can we just get one day without a complicated mental load?

The worst part is that somewhere in all the guilt and performance, the actual moments slip by.

Your kid making you breakfast in bed while you worry about the mess in the kitchen.

Flowers that make you cry but you can't figure out if it's happy crying or overwhelmed crying.

A quiet moment that could have been perfect if you weren't managing how everyone else was feeling about it.

Maybe this year we just show up however we are.

Happy, sad, grateful, overwhelmed, proud, tired, all of it.

Maybe we let Mother's Day be as complicated as actual motherhood instead of pretending it should feel simple.

Because the truth is, you're doing an impossible job with an open heart.

That deserves to be honored exactly as it is.

Even when it's messy. Especially when it's messy.

The real moments don't need to be perfect to be worth celebrating.

At Chatbooks, we believe the messy, real, complicated moments are the ones worth keeping.

Because that's what life is. That’s what love is.
